Cognizant is putting the scale of a global IT services firm behind OpenAI. The company announced on Friday, October 30, the formation of its OpenAI Frontier Capability Group, bringing together more than 25,000 professionals aligned to delivering OpenAI products, including Codex and ChatGPT, for enterprise clients.

The group is designed to help enterprises apply OpenAI models to how they write software, serve customers and run day-to-day operations. Cognizant framed the bottleneck plainly: access to frontier models is no longer what holds many enterprises back. What they lack, the company said, is skilled professionals who know how to build with those models inside the systems their business depends on.

The staffing claim rests on training already done across the company. Cognizant said more than 21,000 of its associates have earned more than 40,000 OpenAI badges, each awarded for completion of learning tracks on OpenAI technologies. The new group adds a dedicated organization focused on building OpenAI-powered systems for clients and supporting them once they are in operation,

The work is also expected to draw on Cognizant's Frontier workforce model, through which it is developing Frontier Certified Engineers and Frontier Business Operators credentialed directly by frontier-model companies.

Cognizant said it often tests new approaches in its own business before taking them to clients, and it pointed to its sales and customer success teams, which already use a solution built on OpenAI models to find and pursue new opportunities. Chief executive Ravi Kumar S said OpenAI is beginning to reshape how Cognizant itself sells. "With Codex and ChatGPT, OpenAI is changing both at once," he said. "We are committing more than 25,000 of our people to bring that change inside our clients' businesses. We started with our own."

OpenAI welcomed the scale of the commitment. Dali Rajic, OpenAI's chief revenue officer, said that by bringing together more than 25,000 professionals in a dedicated practice and putting the technology to work across its own operations, Cognizant is helping more enterprises turn AI into meaningful business impact. Cognizant is one of a select group of Advanced partners in the OpenAI Partner Network, and its Codex hackathons in India and the Americas have brought together more than 12,000 participants.

The group will initially focus on three areas. The first is AI-native software engineering with Codex, designed to support engineers as they write, test and ship new code. The second is application modernization, using Cognizant Application Modernizer, powered by OpenAI models, across the full lifecycle from reverse engineering legacy mainframe code to generating cloud-native code — backed by experience modernizing mainframe systems for more than 500 clients, with engineers reviewing every consequential decision. The third is agentic customer operations, applying OpenAI models to sales, service and support.

As evidence that the approach is already delivering, Cognizant cited work at a global biopharmaceutical company, where it co-engineered an OpenAI-powered enterprise assistant that brings search, content creation, translation and approvals into one place. The company said that assistant has handled more than 5 million conversations and cut content creation time by 60 percent.

For enterprise IT leaders, the announcement is a signal of where the services market is heading. The competition is no longer only about access to models, which clients can increasingly buy directly, but about who can supply thousands of trained engineers and operators able to embed those models in legacy estates, regulated workflows and customer operations — and keep them running in production.
