Chip Stocks Head Toward $2 Trillion Wipeout as AI Buildout Costs Spook Investors

Cartoon illustration of worried investors watching a semiconductor chip ride a plunging rollercoaster above a data center skyline.

U.S. semiconductor stocks were set to lose about $2 trillion in market value on Thursday, extending a steep selloff that had already erased $1.64 trillion over the previous six trading sessions, according to Reuters.

NVIDIA and Cisco Bet on 400G-Per-Lane USFP Optics to Densify AI Fabrics

Cartoon illustration of a data center switch packed with pluggable optical modules and glowing fiber cables linking server racks.

NVIDIA and Cisco are trying to solve one of the least glamorous but most binding limits in AI data centers: the front panel of the switch. At the Open Compute Project Global Summit in Santa Clara on October 12, the two companies announced plans for Ultra-Dense Small Form Factor Pluggable, or USFP, a new optical module designed for 400 gigabits per second per lane.

Microsoft Puts Its Own Maia 300 Chips at the Center of Its AI Data Centers

Cartoon illustration of a giant friendly computer chip giving a thumbs up among server racks inside a bright data center.

Microsoft is making its biggest push yet to run its own AI services on its own silicon. The company said Monday that its newest in-house accelerator, the Maia 300, will start rolling out next year, and that it expects to install its Maia chips at multiple-gigawatt scale across its data centers. The plan would make Maia the primary inference system behind Microsoft products — the hardware that answers every Copilot prompt, summarizes every Teams meeting, and generates every research response.

The Data-Center Power Crunch Is Hitting Chip Suppliers - Except Nvidia and Broadcom

Cartoon illustration of a data center plugged into a straining power grid beside chip packages.

Morgan Stanley warned on October 5, 2026, that a worsening U.S. data-center power crunch is now hitting the chip supply chain — but Nvidia and Broadcom are relatively insulated. The brokerage estimated last month that U.S. data-center developers face a 34 percent net power shortfall through 2028, equivalent to roughly 32 gigawatts, even after accounting for behind-the-meter generation and fuel cells.

SpaceX's $40 Billion Bid for Nvidia Chips Shows How the AI Boom Is Being Financed

Cartoon illustration of a rocket lifting a giant GPU chip toward orbit.

SpaceX is in talks to raise 40 billion dollars — about 10 billion in bank loans and 30 billion in investment-grade debt — to buy Nvidia AI chips, the Financial Times reported on October 6, 2026, with Reuters and Bloomberg confirming the outlines the following day. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the financing and place the debt with institutional investors, with bond fund Pimco among a small group of lenders in talks. If completed, the deal would close in 2027 and would rank among the largest debt financings ever tied to the AI buildout.

Nvidia Plans Investment in Inference Chip Startup d-Matrix

Cartoon illustration of two connected processor chips with glowing data pathways on a deep navy background.

Nvidia plans to take a stake in d-Matrix, a Santa Clara startup that designs chips for AI inference, The Information reported on October 8. The investment, whose size and valuation were not disclosed, is part of a broader Nvidia strategy to make its technology interoperable with rival silicon rather than fighting every inference workload alone.
